Analyze user journeys with Journey Analytics (boards, reports, element tagging)
Build metric, funnel and flows reports on automatically captured data, group them into shared boards, and tag elements so clicks on similar buttons are reported together.
The Wingify Guide can move a cursor on your screen inside the app and walk you through this, click by click (7 steps).
#When to use this
Your team wants one shared picture of what visitors do, where they convert and where they drop off. For example, before a seasonal sale you want a single board with daily traffic, the product-to-checkout funnel, and the paths visitors take from the homepage. Journey Analytics builds these reports on data captured automatically by the SmartCode, then lets you drill into the recordings and heatmaps behind any number.
Journey Analytics has two building blocks: reports (Metric, Funnel or Flows) and boards, which group reports and text into a shared dashboard.
#Before you start
- Journey Analytics is a separate plan or add-on. Contact your account manager to confirm access. Element Tagging is available on Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans.
- The Wingify SmartCode is installed on the pages you want to analyze.
- Data tracking is enabled. Registering a domain does not start capture: on the setup screen, click Enable data tracking.
- Custom events you want to analyze are registered in Data Platform > Events.
Note: Journey Analytics has its own entry in the left navigation. If you don't see it, check with your account manager that it's part of your plan. Since September 9, 2026, new accounts find Metric Reports in Journey Analytics rather than in Behavior Analytics.
#Steps
#1. Open Journey Analytics
Click Journey Analytics in the left navigation. You land on Overview, which has:
- an Ask anything bar to query your data in plain language with Wingz (name the board or report in your question for a precise answer),
- Recently Viewed (your last 10 boards and reports),
- a list with Starred and Created by me tabs, filtered by All / Boards / Reports.
Use Starred/Recents for a quick jump, or Browse to search the full catalog with Add filter + and the sort dropdown.
#2. Create a board
Click + Create and, under Board, click Start with a blank board. Name it and click + Add description to state its purpose. Then add content with Create new report, Add existing report or Add Text, or use + Add content in the top right (Add existing reports, Text, or Create & add a New Metric report, New Funnel report or New Flows report).
#3. Build a metric report
Click + Create > Metric (or add one from a board). In the left panel, click + Add and choose Events (Standard, Custom, System or Behavior events such as Rage Click), Metrics saved in Data Platform, or Funnels. Each item becomes a lettered card (A, B...). On each card:
- click + filter to narrow the event, for example Page URL and Title,
- choose Measured as: Unique Users, Total Events, Total Sessions, Frequency per User, or Aggregate Property (Sum, Average, First Value...) for numeric properties like revenue.
Name the report and click Save. Changes here never alter your Data Platform definitions.
#4. Build a funnel report
Click + Create > Funnel. Either click Select Funnel to import a Data Platform funnel (its steps can't be edited), or click Select step to pick events or metrics, then Add step (up to 32 steps). Set Complete all steps within as the conversion window; visitors who don't finish in time count as drop-offs. Choose Conversion Rate (By Unique or By Totals), Unique Users or Total Events, then Save.
#5. Build a flows report
Click + Create > Flows. In the Flows dropdown, choose whether the flow starts with an event (where visitors go next) or ends with one (how they got there). Click Select Event, add a + filter if needed (for example Text equals Request Demo), and adjust the conversion window (default Complete within 7 days). Use Steps (3 to 20) for depth and Paths (3 to 10) for breadth.
In the diagram, band width shows how many visitors took each path; the grey Drop-off bar shows who stopped. Click any bar to open Session Recordings, Heatmaps or View Users for exactly those visitors.
#6. Tag elements to group clicks
Go to Configurations > Elements and click Create. Select the domain, enter a URL, pick a Device Viewport, and click Launch. In the Visual Editor, click Create a Tag, click an element, enter a Name and Element type, and choose a Location scope: Sitewide, This page only or Specific page groups. Use the Navigate tab to add the same button from other pages, then click Save Element.
In any report, add a Click event, click + filter, select Element Tag and pick your tags to aggregate those clicks.
Tip: Tag elements by clicking them in the Visual Editor. Selectors typed with Add selector path manually don't match past data, so you lose retroactive reporting.
#Check that it worked
- Reports show data for your date range; dotted line segments mean the latest interval is still in progress.
- On a board, use the Filter by presets (Today, Yesterday, 7D, 15D, 30D, Custom) to check all widgets at once.
- A tagged element shows historical clicks right away when it was selected visually.
#Common questions
What is captured without any setup? Page views, form submissions, sessions and clicks on interactive elements (links, buttons, form fields, ARIA roles, elements with click handlers or that change the page). Hover, focus and clicks on plain text aren't captured. To capture an element that's missed, tag it or add data-wingify-capture="true" to it.
Why is my custom event missing? It must be created in Data Platform > Events. Custom events only have data from the time they were created.
Who can see my boards? All users of your account can view all boards and reports. Starring only affects your own Starred tab.
My button's selector changed after a redesign. Do I lose history? No, if you edit the tag and add the new element next to the old definition. Don't delete the old one.
